For This Republican, Never Trump Means “I’m With Her”

by Caroline McCain

Following a line of other right-wing wacko birds, Trump insulted a man I esteem and love, a man who has risked his life in service of his country. He insulted my grandfather and attacked the very qualities — loyalty, bravery and selflessness — that he and countless other POWs embody. He mocked the sacrifice many have given and the anguish families have endured when their heroes have suffered alone miles away.

John McCain spent 5½ years in captivity as a POW in North Vietnam. His first-person account of that harrowing ordeal was published in U.S. News in May 1973. Shot down in his Skyhawk dive bomber on Oct. 26, 1967, Navy flier McCain was taken prisoner with fractures in his right leg and both arms. He received minimal care and was kept in wretched conditions that he describes vividly in the U.S. News special report

My grandfather responded with grace and forgiveness — as only a man who was held in captivity for years can. But I’ve been nursing a grudge ever since. Trump’s statement, in my view, is unforgivable, and speaks to the kind of man he is: a coward who has never faced danger in his life, an insecure brat who shirked duty for comfort, and a man who is wholly unfit to serve as commander-in-chief.

USA TODAY’s Editorial Board: Trump is ‘unfit for the presidency’

USA Today issues its first-ever un-endorsement for ‘dangerous demagogue’ Donald Trump

In the 34-year history of USA TODAY, the Editorial Board has never taken sides in the presidential race. But this year, they’re having to alter that policy for the first time; Not to endorse a candidate. To un-endorse one.

Because every presidential race is different, we revisit our no-endorsement policy every four years. We’ve never seen reason to alter our approach. Until now.

“Whatever you do, however, resist the siren song of a dangerous demagogue. By all means vote, just not for Donald Trump.”

This year, the choice isn’t between two capable major party nominees who happen to have significant ideological differences. This year, one of the candidates — Republican nominee Donald Trump — is, by unanimous consensus of the Editorial Board, unfit for the presidency.

From the day he declared his candidacy 15 months ago through this week’s first presidential debate, Trump has demonstrated repeatedly that he lacks the temperament, knowledge, steadiness and honesty that America needs from its presidents.

Whether through indifference or ignorance, Trump has betrayed fundamental commitments made by all presidents since the end of World War II. These commitments include unwavering support for NATO allies, steadfast opposition to Russian aggression, and the absolute certainty that the United States will make good on its debts. He has expressed troubling admiration for authoritarian leaders and scant regard for constitutional protections.

The Strange Paradox At The Heart of the Alt-Right

Through tacit endorsements of conspiracy theories and offering policies based on bigotry and blind nationalism, Trump has given a loud voice to the concerns of white supremacists, misogynists, militant patriots, and other groups loosely collected by the umbrella term “the Alt-Right.”

What the alt-right is actually decrying is not a loss of liberty but a loss of privilege.

The chief campaign of the Alt Right and figures within it — such as provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos or MRA crank Scott Adams — is a war against attempts to give women and minorities a larger role in our culture and anyone who might suggest hate speech is actually dangerous. Calling themselves “cultural libertarians,” many of these young conservatives feel they are waging a righteous war for liberty against a powerful establishment of feminists and crybabies.
