MADISON — You can support two major Madison County charities this month – while enjoying a plate filled with a delicious pit-barbecue chicken meal with all the fixings. The community-wide fundraiser is set for 5-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Madison Young Farmers’ ground behind Madison County High School. Being coordinated through Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Oak Park, proceeds from the event will go to help MESA (Madison Emergency Services Association) and the ministries of the Rapidan Charge Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. There will be music and a brief program and take-out orders will also be available. Donations will also be accepted.

MESA has been an integral part of Madison County’s response to people in need. Founded in 1982, MESA has consistently provided emergency aid in the form of food, clothing, shelter, and emergency financial assistance to those in the county who are experiencing a temporary crisis in their lives.

Highlighting the fundraiser will be a special tribute to Lisa Warren, who served as MESA’s executive director from July 2011 through May. There will also be a special welcome to MESA’s new executive director, Jennifer McLeod, who started in June.

The Rapidan Charge Pastor’s Discretionary Fund was founded five years ago when a member of the Rapidan United Methodist Charge (which includes Bethsaida, Mount Zion and Walker’s United Methodist churches) saw a pressing need for the church through the work of the pastor to quickly assist people in crisis and who then helped to begin the fund.

To RSVP (deadline is this Friday, Aug. 16) or for more information about the event, please contact the Rev. Alan Follett at (540) 672-5233 or call MESA at (540) 948-4427.
