The grotesque injustice of starving 1 million unemployed Americans

We are in essence punishing the poor for their poverty, as if poverty were an ethical breach, not the result of interlocking social, political, and personal realities, many of which are entirely out of poor people’s hands. How often do city planners consider the job disruption caused when they cancel (or never build) a bus route? When corporations decide there’s no profit in reliable internet access for rural communities, how do the rural unemployed complete online job applications?

Republicans block Senate bill to boost veterans’ benefits

Republicans block Senate bill to boost veterans' benefits

A divided Senate on Thursday derailed Democratic legislation that would have provided $21 billion for medical, education, and job-training benefits for the nation’s veterans. The bill fell victim to election-year disputes over spending and fresh penalties against Iran.

Republicans used a procedural move to block the bill after Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (I) of Vermont chided GOP lawmakers about their priorities.

“I personally, I have to say this honestly, have a hard time understanding how anyone could vote for tax breaks for billionaires, for millionaires, for large corporations, and then say we don’t have the resources to protect our veterans,” said Senator Sanders, the measure’s chief author.

Tuition-Free Community College for Responsible Students

In our growing global economy, Americans need to have more knowledge and more skills to compete — by 2020, an estimated 35 percent of job openings will require at least a bachelor’s degree, and 30 percent will require some college or an associate’s degree. Students should be able to get the knowledge and the skills they need without taking on decades’ worth of student debt.

Texas Public Schools Teaching Kids That Jews Practice ‘Flawed Religion’ and that Blacks Are ‘Descended from Ham’

Right Wing Watch

A religious studies professor found instances of students learning a literal interpretation of the Bible.

report put out by the Texas Freedom Network Education Fund reveals that in some Texas public schools, classes on the Bible’s impact on history are being taught from a right-wing, fundamentalist Christian standpoint.

A Southern Methodist University religious studies professor Mark Chancey found instances of students learning a literal interpretation of the Bible, that the earth is approximately 6,000 years old and that Judaism is a “flawed and incomplete religion” with materials “designed to evangelize rather than provide an objective study of the Bible’s influence.”

TFN also found a lesson explaining “racial origins traced from Noah.”

The claim that Africans are descendants of Ham, whom Noah curses in  Genesis 9 after he “saw the nakedness of his father,” has long been used as a biblical justification for  anti-black racism and slavery.
